This house puts you in the centre of an outstanding place. The village is genuinely full of interesting and friendly people. It is a magnet for artists, artisans, writers and poets. The restaurants range from good to excellent. The nearest is only 20 metres from the front door and is one of the best with delicious food made largely from local organic ingredients. Even the beer and wine are from the area and just as nice. There is easy nearby parking. You can sit on the roof terrace and enjoy the peace and stunning surrounding countryside. The hosts also made us feel very welcome and were very easy to communicate with.

A charming, character home from home with all the mod-cons that you could want. The view from the private roof terrace is, as described, marvellous.
The position of the property within Montolieu couldn't be better. All the shops, bars and restaurants were within easy walking distance and we managed to park in the square outside the small supermarket, just across the road from the apartment, every day.
Montolieu itself is a very pretty town and a great base for exploring some local Cathar history.
Communication from Neil and Jane the owners was absolutely first class giving us lots of tips and advice and introductions to some of the locals in Montolieu. We would highly recommend it.

Neil and Jane's house is a real house with a soul: music, paintings, cooking ... it feels good!
It is ideally located between Toulouse and Narbonne, near Carcassonne, but the village itself is very nice. We had a great New Year's stay there with the family and will keep fond memories of it.
Our only frustration is not having met Neil and Jane in person, because both through their house and the exchanges we had by email, we can guess they are deeply sympathetic :)

The Writers Retreat is a real gem. It is a fabulous home with all the home comforts that you could wish for and well set up for self catering. The roof top terrace is a real gem and a fabulous place to breakfast or enjoy a glass of wine looking out to the fabulous surrounding countryside. It was a perfect base for two couples to share, ideal that we each had a bathroom and would be perfect for a family also. The home is wonderfully situated in a very interesting village Montolieu, the village of books and was a great place to explore with quirky art galleries, a printing museum and antique bookshops. There are good eating places to choose from, a friendly bar , a fabulous wine shop and a local store, perfect for all your needs. It was a great base from which to visit Carcassonne and other villages in the surrounding area. Neil was very helpful leading up to the trip and we had a very warm welcome from Adrian at the local wine shop when picking up the key. It was a fabulous stay and we would thoroughly recommend Neil and Jane's place.

Montolieu is a pretty little village, and Neil and Jane's place couldn't be better placed to enjoy it! Quirky it certainly is, but also very comfortable, and the terrace is a great place to enjoy a sundowner and look at the view. If you enjoy music, Neil's large, eclectic collection certainly contains something to suit all tastes. Of the restaurants we tried, the Commerce was the one the best. Great value, good food and friendly service. And Adrian in the wine shop was a mine of information and very friendly.

We loved our stay in Montolieu and Jane and Neil's cozy maison village was perfect for us. They were so welcoming, it felt like we were staying in the home of really good friends even though we never met. It was a joy to cook in a kitchen that had absolutely everything you could ever need. Evenings were spent mining the record collection for old favourites and drinking wine from the local cave. Mornings meant coffee on the terrace with stunning views down the valley to the Pyrenees. The house is in the heart of this unique village, with shop, bakery and restaurants, as well as bookshops and artists' studios. On any given day there is a lovely local market. Neil gave us loads of top tips on the area and even drew us 3 walking maps from the front door. We can't wait to go back!

Staying at Neil and Jane's was like living in a fairytale! The flat was an oasis, the perfect spot to write and to explore the gorgeous village of Montolieu. Shoutout to the lovely Christine for driving us to and from the airport. Cannot say enough good things about the Writer's Retreat. All I know is that we will be back!

PS have at least 2 meals at Chapters during your stay! You will weep with how wonderful it is.
